Bristol commenced to be a city within the Gloucestershire facet with the Avon, but since it grew it prolonged across the river into Somerset. In 1373 Edward III proclaimed "the city of Bristol with its suburbs and precincts shall henceforth be individual within the counties of Gloucester and Somerset ... and that it should be a county by itself".[
